Yes it's indeed that time of year again - watermelons are everywhere here in Shanghai. Not least in the shopping bags & hands of the locals and that's not only because of its yummy flavor! For Chinese people watermelon may just be that no. 1 summer fruit!
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, watermelon is the best fruit to consume in summer as it is believed to actively cool the body down and reduce summer heat in the body. It clears away symptoms like uncomfortableness, impatience, irritability & restlessness caused by the humid heat in Shanghai.
It is also packed with vitamin C & A...
- During a recent TCM class at the Humanity Hospital in Shanghai Dr. Zhang (my TCM teacher AND doctor) reminded us that Watermelon is an excellent food to help us recover from a hangover (she knows us young laoweis too well) as it hydrates and replaces lost electrolytes. I wonder if she knows it's an excellent summer-treat when injected with vodka as well...
- Together with mango and papaya, watermelon is among the most alkaline (alkaline vs. acid) fruit and super important for our internal body state as well as long-term health.
- Don't throw the inner rind away when the fruit meat has been eaten! It is great in any Asian stir-fry or as a soup (Chines recipes suggest to make soup with seaweed and shrimps).
- If you can get your hands on dried inner rind or make your own, it is a natural remedy for cold soars, mouth ulcers and throat inflammation used in China for centuries!
Creative Ways of Serving Watermelon
On her Danish blog In My Mind my sister recently posted about how to serve watermelon as a super cute and natural-sugar treat! This was when my angel niece Sofia turned 1 last month...
No, the cute treat has nothing to do with grass-covered Watermelon, this is just to show you how cute Sofia is =)
YES my sister's cute treat is a fruit-cocktail-GRILL! I'm not sure if it's just meant for children but I think it's a fun way to serve fruit at any summer-gathering and according to my sister you can serve it as this above grill or a hedgehog! If you use your imagination I'm sure you can come up with some other variations as well =)
If you need to make more than a fruit-snack try a watermelon salad where you use the shell as a bowl! Last summer I posted my water melon recipe on "How to make an impressive summer salad in no time". Find it here.
And Some Fun Chinese "inspiration"
A couple of years ago it became super popular in China to dress babies and toddlers in huge watermelon shells! Super fun & super weird haha but it's still very popular on the Chinese social media - hit google and see for yourself! I wonder what my sister will say if I make one of these for Sofia when I'm back in Denmark next week....
Have fun friends & enjoy the summer-heat more with some TCM food therapy!
