I'm super passionate about yoga and I try my very best to find time to do yoga every day. Some days just 10 minutes sun salutation and other days double up on yoga classes! Yoga helps me maintain my energy and stay healthy (that goes for both my physical & my mental health). Oh and it also makes me stronger, more flexible and super duper fit (Hello Summer)!
Needless to say: YOGA IS AMAZING!
Yoga & Shanghai
With Shanghai's fast-paced life and rather stressful environment yoga is an ideal way to slow down, feel ourself and breathe. Also, living in Shanghai is really the perfect opportunity to explore this ancient philosophy and to get started on something that will benefit body & mind for both short- and long-term!
Yoga & You
Anyone can start practicing yoga and anyone can learn to master yoga. I even believe everyone is meant to... Because yoga is in a sense very very natural for the human being: breathing, stretching, using our bodies – no one taught us these things when we were born, still this is something we humans do every day. Thus it can be argued we all do a bit of yoga during the day - especially if we remember to listen to our body and give it a stretch once in a while in between all those office hours. Through a more focused yoga practice with guidance from skilled yoga teachers we can become more conscious about our body state and learn to be the best version of ourself!
How To Get Started
There’s a wide range of yoga out there and for beginners it can be difficult to figure out the differences between the types and classes introduced by yoga gurus across the globe.
My advice is that you don’t spend too much time trying to figure it all out, just get started at any beginner’s class. Through your practice and with guidance from the teachers who cross your path, you will be lead in the right direction for you… As ancient Hindu scripts say: ”If you are ready, a guru will seek you”.
Yup that’s how yoga works If you ask me, and in the last 2 years I’ve come across several ”modern gurus” in the form of highly passionate, engaging & kind yoga teachers.
Red Door Yoga
I’ve often heard small Shanghai birds sing about the Ashtanga-focused yoga spot in Jing’an: Red Door Yoga. Being a part of Bon App's healthy May gave me the change to finally visit Rob's studio and not least the change of doing Ashtanga yoga with Bingbing every morning this week. I'm not sure if my body loves me or hates me right now, but I certainly got both stronger & more flexible in just 4 days!
Whether you are an absolute beginner or you like me want to focus your practice and take it to the next level through Ashtanga practice, the Red Door is open! And in the classrooms behind the Red Door you find what many modern yoga spots lack of: high attention to the individual student.
You also find an intense focus on the alignment between breath & movement and of course: lots of practice, practice, practice.
Main Yoga, Pure Yoga & Other Yoga Picks
Shanghai has a lot of yoga centers - one of the newest additions is Main Yoga on Huaihai lu. I already visited them and will go back for their "Soft Opening Yoga Art Fair" later this month. Yoga & Art - beautiful combo!
