Oh happy happy Labour Day or should I just be honest and say: Happy Happy Long Weekend With Excellent Opportunity to Get Away (from Shanghai).
Early Friday morning we left Shanghai and traveled to the Hainan Province in South of China for 3 days of WELL-CATION. Arriving in Meilan, Haikou airport (one of the 2 airports on Hainan Island) 2.5 hours later and being welcomed by flowers on the airport walk, clear blue sky, super fresh air & beautiful palm trees made me wonder: Is this still China?
Oh Yes this is definitely China.. which I quickly realized when I was next being met by a fake jungle (with Monkey) in the arrival hall, a train ticket office with absolute no tickets left to get out of the airport for the next 5 hours and 10 blue ladies with umbrellas selling car services way over price. Oh well, next time we'll get our tickets in advance from expat friendly C-trip and this time we made the trip of 200km from the capital Haikou to our resort close to Wanning in an air conditioned car. Mei Wentis 没问题 (favorite Chinese expression meaning "No Problem" just having a much better ring to it).
The province Hainan consists of several islands and the biggest and most popular destination is the island of same name as the province: Hainan Dao (Hainan Island). It's very popular because of its tropical climate, clean air & beautiful nature - also popular among Chinese tourists so "be careful" which place you choose to visit if you want to avoid too big crowds (that's all of us living in Shanghai, right?). A quick guide for your reference:
Sanya: No Go.
Everywhere else: Go.
Our Hainan Destination
We booked a Sheraton resort (first resort holiday together in our 2 year long relationship!) close to the city Wanning which is 200km from Haikou airport. If we had had tickets for the high speed train it would take us 1 hour waiting in the airport, a bit over 1 hour on the train to Wanning plus a 20 minute car ride to the beach resort area. Totally approximately 3 hours I reckon. It would cost us 60 RMB/train ticket and Sheraton has free shuttle service from Wanning.
As we as mentioned did not get our hands on train tickets (long weekend in China = lots of travelers, yes we should know better...) we booked a driver in the airport and due to traffic the trip took 2-3 hours but it was super comfortable and we got escorted directly to the resort. The driver charged 500 RMB after a bit of bargaining.
Sheraton has 2 big resorts here, great availability and great prices! We pay approximately 600 RMB/night for super amazing "Ocean Front View Room" with all facilities and massive Sheraton Signature breakfast included.
Oh we got direct flight tickets from Shanghai to Haikou Meilan Airport for approximately 2000 RMB/ticket 2 weeks before our trip.
Let the long labor weekend begin with a swim in the ocean, a dip in the lagoon pool & a fresh coconut water treat <3
