Yoga is super healthy for both body & mind. But what about your yoga mat - is it healthy?
Old sweat, dirt, bacterias and other stuff we don't wanna talk tooo much about may be hidden from the eyes but that doesn't mean it's not there. More likely, if you use your mat just relatively often it probably has at least a few skin disease causing bacterias stuck to it. Yuk. The good news is that it is easy to do something about it and I will tell you how.
If you don't have a mat because you're just using you yoga center's mat Stop It Immediately. Buy you own Mat. And Start Cleaning it. Properly.
Here's my secret to keeping my yoga mat clean & healthy
1. after one sweaty use
I wipe my mat with Apple Cider Vinegar solution. Approximately 1 l of hot water and 1/3 of a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. Afterwards I wipe it with clear water and endwise I dry it with a clean towel
2. once in a while
I soak the whole mat in Apple Vinegar Solution. I use a bucket and turn the mat over after 10 minutes. Afterwards I rinse it in the shower and let it dry until the next day
3. I hear
that you can clean you mat with an alcohol solution - simply disinfect it. I did not try myself (but I did once clean the bottom of my handbag with hand sanitizer after realizing how many places I put it down outside - it may be similar to this).
The solution is very ideal to clean any other workout equipment you have a home and which just goes straight under the bed after use!
Your yoga mat is part of your foundation when doing yoga so it should be clean & healthy. I hope this post make you agree and inspire you for some summer cleaning!
